Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

A phrase that is becoming more and more popular among civilisation (and less popular among politicians) is ‘climate change’.

A lot of politicians don’t like the idea of dealing with climate change as it is difficult, often divisive and challenges the self-interest of those in powerful positions. Many prefer to claim that it doesn’t exist and obviously believe they know more than 99% of the world’s climate change scientists that have spent their life studying the subject with no vested interest other than that of humanity. I liken it to an oncologist who tells you you have cancer and you choosing to ignore him or flat out telling him you don’t.

The reality is climate change is happening and if nothing is done about it, the world as we know it won’t be the same for future generations. Climate change is considered only the third most serious issue facing the world behind international terrorism and poverty, hunger and lack of fresh drinking water.

So what exactly is the big deal? What exactly is climate change doing to our wonderful planet?

  • Temperatures are breaking records around the world
  • Arctic sea ice glaciers are melting, therefore sea levels are rising at their fastest rate in 2,000 years
  • Climate change will lead to a refugee crisis
  • Two thirds of the Great Barrier Reef has been damaged as a result of climate change
  • Global flooding could triple by 2030
  • More greenhouse gases are in our atmosphere than any time in human history
  • Earth could warm by 6 degree this century

Now, what can we do to contribute to the slowdown of climate change? You can incorporate the 3 R’s, Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, to minimise your footprint.

REDUCE – The logic behind this is simple, if we reduce the amount of waste we produce, then there is less to recycle or reuse

REUSE – Rather than being so flippant with your household items and tossing them away, evaluate if there is another need for them. Whether it be to sell it off, give it away, donate or repair rather than replace. NO matter what there are more options than sending it to landfill

RECYCLE – Recycling is the most commonly used ‘green’ activity, but you can amp it up even further when purchasing your items, ensuring they are packaged with recycled materials.

As a firm, we are challenging ourselves and looking at our homes, our office and our cars, and reviewing how we can incorporate the 3 R’s into our everyday lives. How about you challenge yourselves and raise awareness to those around you to see if you are living your everyday life to best benefit our planet.

“Our atmosphere is like the story of Goldilocks. It’s not too thick, it’s not too thin, it’s just right. And we need to keep it like that” – Al Gore
