Just Breathe …

Breathing… there isn’t much to it right ?

Subconsciously the answer is yes. But according to experts we are only breathing at 10-20% of our full capacity, so are we giving our bodies what it truly needs for optimum health? Oxygen is our main life source and exhalation is the main way to expel toxins, so poor breathing can contribute to a multitude of health problems.

Deep breathing through the nose helps us to draw fuller breaths, which in turn stimulates the lower lungs to distribute greater amounts of oxygen throughout the body. This part of our lungs is rich with parasympathetic nerve receptors associated with calming the mind.

Breath work is a unique self-healing technique because it is the only conscious means of improving, maintaining and repairing the other unconsciously run systems of the body. The following can all be controlled through proper breath practices:

  • Heart rate
  • Blood pressure
  • Circulation
  • Digestion
  • Hormone secretion
  • Mental and emotional states

This month, the challenge for our wellbeing program is to practice deep breathing daily and evaluate at the end of the month if something so simple can make changes in our health. Why not give this one a try for yourself?

“There is one way of breathing that is shameful and constricted. Then, there’s another way: a breath of love that takes you all the way to infinity” – Rumi
