Good Government … A Global Oxymoron

It is easy to understand why western democratic societies over the world are becoming more and more disenchanted with today’s politicians.

Unfortunately today we are seeing the rise of the ‘politics of me’. The rise of political parties or politicians that feed the fears of the individual, give them someone to blame or promise to cure all that ails them without any commitment to developing policies of substance. It is cheap politics. It is lazy and dangerous. It is about popularity and as Orson Wells so aptly stated ‘popularity should be no scale for the election of politicians’.

Good government must be characterised by leadership and leadership involves making the right decisions even when they are hard or unpopular. Todays’ politicians seem to be incapable of making hard decisions that are in the long term interests of their nation and more importantly the world. They are more concerned with polls (aka popularity) and the election cycle than leaving a legacy for future generations of which they can be proud.

In time the lack of substance behind this current trend will exposed for what it is. At that time millions of people around the world will realise the promises were hollow, they were duped and we are all worse off for it.

But we should not lose hope. The forest returns healthier and more vibrant after the wildfire has burned itself out.
