From 1 July 2027, new requirements will apply to how director identification numbers are reported to ASIC.
A director identification number (director ID) is a unique 15-digit number issued to a company director after they have verified their identity with the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS). Each director only has one director ID, which they keep for life, even if they change companies, change their name or stop being a director. The director ID system is designed to help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities and improve the accuracy of company records.
Currently, director IDs are administered by the ABRS and are not recorded on the ASIC companies register. From 1 July 2027, companies will be required to provide director IDs to ASIC through company reporting processes, including annual reviews and when notifying changes to director details.
Ahead of these changes, directors should make sure the personal details recorded with the ABRS are correct and match the details held by ASIC.
If you are a company director, please log in to the ABRS and review your details under:
My Details > View Person Details
Check that your full name and other personal information are correct and update your ABRS details directly if anything has changed.
Importantly, Progue cannot access or update your director ID details with the ABRS on your behalf. Directors must manage their own director ID information through the ABRS.
Once you have reviewed your details, please advise Progue of your full name exactly as it appears on the ABRS under My Details > View Person Details.
We can then compare this against the director’s name currently recorded for you with ASIC.
If there are any differences between the two records, we will contact you directly and organise any documents required to update the ASIC records.
ASIC is encouraging companies and directors to check their records ahead of the July 2027 changes. Making sure your ABRS and ASIC details are consistent now may help avoid delays or issues once companies begin providing director IDs to ASIC.
The new reporting requirements are still some time away, but checking your details now is a simple way to make sure your records are ready.
